Privacy notice
How My Insurance Expert collects, uses, shares and protects your personal data under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 — including what we collect, why, who we pass it to as an introducer, and the rights you have over your information.
Who we are
My Insurance Expert (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the website myinsuranceexpert.co.uk and is the data controller responsible for the personal data described in this notice. Our registered address is 60 Tottenham Court Road, London, W1T 2EW.
We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator. If you have any questions about this notice or how we handle your data, contact us at editorial@myinsuranceexpert.co.uk.
We provide independent research and information, and we act as an introducer. When you make an enquiry, we pass your details to one or more FCA-authorised brokers or comparison partners, who then contact you directly. We are not FCA-authorised and we do not arrange, advise on or sell insurance ourselves.
What personal data we collect
Depending on how you use the site, we may collect:
- Enquiry form details — your name, contact details (such as email and phone number), postcode, age band, the cover requirements you tell us about, and whether you have given marketing consent.
- Website and analytics data — information about how you use the site, such as pages viewed and links clicked.
- Technical data — your IP address and device or browser information, collected automatically when you visit.
How we collect it
We collect personal data in three main ways: directly from you when you complete an enquiry form or contact us; automatically through cookies and similar technologies as you browse the site (see our cookie policy); and, occasionally, from analytics providers that help us understand how the site is used.
Our lawful bases for using your data
Under the UK GDPR we must have a lawful basis for processing your personal data. We rely on:
- Consent — for passing your enquiry to FCA-authorised brokers or comparison partners, and for sending you marketing where you have asked to receive it. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests — for running, securing and improving the website, including site analytics and protecting against fraud and misuse, where these interests are not overridden by your rights.
How we use your data
We use your personal data to:
- Match and pass your enquiry to one or more FCA-authorised brokers or comparison partners, as an introducer, so they can contact you about cover.
- Respond to you and deal with any questions or requests you send us.
- Improve the site — understanding how it is used so we can make it more useful and keep it secure.
Who we share it with
When you submit an enquiry, we share the details you provide with one or more FCA-authorised brokers or comparison partners matched to your requirements. Once they receive your data, they become independent controllers of it and handle it under their own privacy notices, so we recommend reading the privacy notice of any partner that contacts you.
We also use analytics providers, which act as our processors and handle data only on our instructions. We do not sell your personal data.
International transfers
We aim to keep your personal data within the UK or European Economic Area (EEA). Where a provider processes data outside the UK or EEA, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place — such as UK adequacy regulations or standard contractual clauses — so your data receives an equivalent level of protection.
How long we keep it
We keep personal data only for as long as we need it. Enquiry details are typically retained for up to 24 months to handle your enquiry, deal with any follow-up and meet our legal and record-keeping obligations, after which they are securely deleted or anonymised. Website and analytics data is generally held in aggregated or short-term form. Where we rely on your consent, we stop the relevant processing if you withdraw it.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectify data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Erase your data in certain circumstances.
- Restrict our processing of your data in certain circumstances.
- Object to processing based on our legitimate interests, and to direct marketing at any time.
- Portability — receive certain data in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent.
To exercise any of these rights, email editorial@myinsuranceexpert.co.uk. We will respond within one month. Note that once a partner becomes a controller of your data, you may also need to contact them directly to exercise rights over the data they hold.
Marketing and how to opt out
We only send you marketing where you have given consent. You can opt out or unsubscribe at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email, or by emailing editorial@myinsuranceexpert.co.uk. Opting out of marketing does not affect any enquiry you have already asked us to pass on.
Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for essential site functions, analytics and security. For full details of the cookies we use and how to manage them, see our cookie policy.
How to complain
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, please contact us first at editorial@myinsuranceexpert.co.uk so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
