How we compile our insurance cost figures

Every cost figure on My Insurance Expert is built from named, public UK sources and clearly labelled as indicative. This page explains exactly how we research, what “indicative” means, how often we refresh, and how you can challenge anything you read.

Our methodology in brief

  • Sources: we compile figures from published UK industry and government data — the ABI, the FCA, gov.uk and insurers’ own published material.
  • Indicative, not quotes: our figures are typical ranges for orientation, not personalised premiums. Your own quote will differ.
  • Independent: we research and introduce; we do not run live quote engines or claim our figures are exact premiums.
  • Refreshed regularly, with a “last updated” date on every page so you can see how current the data is.

How we compile our figures

We are an independent research and introducer service. We do not sell policies and we do not operate a live pricing engine, so our cost figures are compiled rather than quoted. We start from published, named UK sources and build typical ranges from them, cross-checking across more than one source wherever we can.

SourceWhat we use it for
Association of British Insurers (ABI)Industry-wide premium trends, average claim and payout statistics, and market context.
Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)Regulatory data, market studies and consumer pricing reviews across general and protection insurance.
gov.ukOfficial statistics, tax treatment (for example Insurance Premium Tax) and public health and population data.
Published insurer & industry dataInsurers’ own published figures, product literature and reputable industry research to sense-check ranges.

Figures are compiled from public sources and shown as indicative ranges — they are not personalised premiums or quotes.

Why your own quote will differ

When we describe a figure as indicative, we mean it is a typical, representative cost intended to give you a sense of scale — not a price you have been offered. Real premiums are individually underwritten, so the number you are actually quoted will reflect your own circumstances.

The main reasons your quote will differ include your age, your health and medical history, your postcode, the level and type of cover you choose, and each insurer’s own underwriting and pricing. Two people side by side can be quoted very different premiums for the same product. That is why we publish ranges and context rather than single “your price” numbers.

How often we refresh

Insurance pricing and the underlying data move over time, so we review and refresh our cost figures regularly and update them when sources are revised or the market shifts. Every page carries a “last updated” date so you can see at a glance how current the information is. Where a fact is time-sensitive, we re-check it against the original source before republishing.

What we don’t do

Being clear about our limits is part of being trustworthy. We do not run live quote engines, and we do not claim our figures are exact premiums. We are not an FCA-authorised intermediary, we do not arrange or sell policies, and nothing on the site is personalised financial advice. Our role is to research independently, present the data plainly, and — where you ask — introduce you to providers who can give you a real, personalised quote.

Our UK Insurance Cost Index

Our UK Insurance Cost Index brings the data together in one place: typical cost ranges across the products we cover, built from the same named sources above. It is compiled by pulling published industry and government figures, normalising them into comparable indicative ranges, and refreshing them on the same regular review cycle as the rest of the site. As with every figure we publish, the index is for orientation — it is not a quote and will not match any individual premium.

How to challenge a figure

If you think a figure looks wrong, out of date or unclear, we want to hear about it. Email editorial@myinsuranceexpert.co.uk with the page and the figure in question, and our editorial team will review it against the original sources and correct it if needed. Our wider approach to accuracy, sourcing and corrections is set out in our editorial standards.
