Cookie policy

This policy explains what cookies are, the cookies My Insurance Expert uses and why, and how you can manage or disable them. It sits alongside our privacy policy, which explains how we handle your personal data more broadly.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device when you visit. They let a site remember your actions and preferences over time, keep a session working as you move between pages, and help the site owner understand how the site is used. Similar technologies — such as pixels, local storage and tags — work in comparable ways, and we refer to them all as “cookies” in this policy.

My Insurance Expert (myinsuranceexpert.co.uk) is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). We aim to use as few cookies as possible and to be clear about the ones we do use.

The categories of cookie we use

The cookies on this site fall into three groups. Strictly necessary cookies are always on because the site cannot work properly without them; the other categories support analytics and partner attribution.

CategoryWhat it doesExamplesDuration (indicative)
Strictly necessary / essentialMakes the site function: keeps your lead-form journey together as a session and supports basic security. These cannot be switched off in our systems.Lead-form journey session cookie; security/anti-abuse cookiesSession (deleted when you close your browser), or a short period
Analytics / performanceHelps us understand how visitors use the site — pages viewed, broad journeys and aggregate trends — so we can improve it. We use Google Analytics 4, configured to anonymise data where possible (for example IP anonymisation) and reported in aggregate.Google Analytics 4 (_ga and related identifiers)Up to around 2 years; some session-only
Affiliate / partner trackingSet when you click through to an FCA-authorised partner so that an introduction can be attributed correctly. This lets the partner recognise that the visit came from us; it is not used to build advertising profiles on this site.Partner referral / attribution identifiersTypically up to 30–90 days, depending on the partner

Durations are indicative and can vary by browser and by third-party provider. Cookies set by third parties (such as Google or a partner) are controlled by those organisations under their own policies.

How to manage or disable cookies

You are in control of non-essential cookies. Where an on-site consent control is shown, you can use it to accept or reject analytics and partner-tracking cookies and to change your choice later. Strictly necessary cookies cannot be disabled, as the site would not work without them.

You can also manage cookies directly in your browser. Most browsers let you see what cookies are stored, delete them, and block some or all cookies for the future. The exact steps differ by browser — look under settings for “Privacy”, “Cookies” or “Site data” in Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox or your mobile browser. Please note that blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site, including the lead-form journey, from working.

To opt out of Google Analytics across all websites, you can install Google’s browser add-on. You can also reduce affiliate tracking by clearing cookies before clicking through to a partner.

Third-party cookies and links

Some cookies are set by third parties whose services we use or whom you choose to visit. The main one is Google Analytics 4, provided by Google. When you follow a link from this site to an FCA-authorised partner, that partner’s own cookies and policies then apply. We do not control third-party cookies, and we encourage you to read the relevant policies:

  • Google — see Google’s privacy policy and “How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services” (policies.google.com).
  • Partners — each FCA-authorised partner publishes its own cookie and privacy policy on its website.

For more on how we handle personal data, including your rights, see our privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

We may update this cookie policy from time to time to reflect changes to the cookies we use or to legal and regulatory requirements. When we make material changes we will update the date below and, where appropriate, the on-site consent control. Please check this page periodically. If you have any questions about our use of cookies, contact us at editorial@myinsuranceexpert.co.uk.
